Response quality guidelines

Testing with UserCrowd is easy, but there are some simple guidelines you need to follow for your responses to be eligible for payment.

Every response is reviewed before payment. Responses that fail to meet these guidelines are not paid, and low-quality responses impact your rating as a tester. Your rating determines how many tests you will be selected for.

The guidelines below, where relevant, also apply to Interviews you take part in. You can find more information on participating in interviews, as well as a few more Interview-specific tips here.

Take your time

Don’t rush through tests. Every test must be given your best effort. Moderate rushing may result in some of your responses being rejected. Speeding through tests will result in being banned from our platform.

Read questions and instructions carefully

Many tests are similar, but every test is different. Read the questions and instructions carefully to ensure you know what you are required to do.

Provide genuine answers

There is rarely a "right" or "wrong" answer in research—in general, researchers want to know your real thoughts, whatever they are. Therefore your answers must be genuine, and from you. You may not use an AI generated tool, like ChatGPT, to formulate your answers.

Using an AI-generated tool to answer written questions is prohibited in our Testing rules and may result in you being banned from the platform.

Be thorough, clear, and specific

Take the time to provide as much information as you can when giving written and recorded responses. Make your answers clear by writing and speaking in full sentences (where appropriate).

When taking a test that requires audio recording the researchers are specifically looking to hear your thoughts during the experience. Please be sure to be clear and verbally explain your thought process in detail.

Answer the ‘why’ questions

Many tests ask you to explain why you clicked or answered in a certain way. Always give the real reason why. Do not skip or ignore these questions.

For example:

  • If you’re asked why you chose an option, don’t say “it’s better” or “I like it”. Say why you thought it was better or what you liked about it.

  • If you’re asked to click somewhere to accomplish XYZ and then asked why, don’t answer “to XYZ”. Explain why you thought the place you clicked was the correct place to accomplish XYZ.

Do not skip questions

Always provide an appropriate response to acknowledge you have read the question. Do not leave fields blank.

  • If the question does not apply to you, type N/A

  • If asked if you have any additional feedback at the end of a test and you have nothing else to contribute, please state that in your response

  • If you find a question confusing, state that in your response

  • If a question is not marked as required, but still asks for a specific response (i.e. "Why did you select XYZ?"), you still need to answer. It may have been that the researcher mistakenly left it as optional.

Only questions which are not marked as required and also only ask for supplemental information (i.e. "Any other feedback?") can be skipped. Any other skipped questions will impact your tester rating.

Be polite and professional

You don’t have to give positive feedback, but you should give feedback as you would want someone to give feedback to you, or how you might give feedback in person. Be constructive and know that there is a human being on the other end reading your answers.

For example:

  • “The logo looks unprofessional” or “I find the navigation very confusing” are great answers

  • “This sucks” or “I hate it” are unacceptable responses

Answers containing any type of profanity or expletives are unacceptable unless it is simply repeating something you've seen in a design or something that the researcher has explicitly asked for. This includes abbreviations and applies to both positive and negative comments.

Any comments that can be interpreted as vulgar or offensive will not be accepted.

Respond in the same language as the test is written

Ensure that the language(s) you have listed on your profile are languages in which you are fluent so that you can respond to any test you receive in the language in which it is written.

Using translation apps to formulate your responses is prohibited in our Testing rules and may result in you being banned from the platform.
