When taking part in a test on UserCrowd, you may be required to enable your camera, share your screen or speak aloud during some tasks. Seeing your facial reactions, hearing your words, and seeing your screen all help the researcher to understand your thoughts and experiences as you navigate through the test.

What's recorded

The recording requirements for each test will be clearly stated on the welcome screen before you begin. You will be asked to enable access to your camera, microphone, and/or screen, depending on what the researcher has requested. It is mandatory to allow access to whatever the requirements are to participate in the test. For example, if a test requires your camera and audio, you will not have the option to leave your camera off and only share audio.

Privacy

Participant privacy is important to us. Recordings are only accessible by the company conducting the research as well as the UserCrowd team who can access the videos for quality assurance purposes. If you'd like to read more about our policies, click here to view our terms of use.

Setup & participation

Before you start, please ensure you are in a quiet space and that your setup is ready. If the test has audio recording enabled please remember to think aloud during the experience. If you don't speak aloud during audio recordings this can have a negative impact on your user rating. Check out our response quality guidelines for more information.

You don't need to install any additional plugins or software. However, please ensure that your browser supports recordings. If it doesn't, we'll ask you to switch to a browser that does. We recommend using the latest version of any of the following browsers:

  • Chrome

  • Firefox

  • Safari

  • Microsoft Edge (Note: Edge on Android is not supported).

If you disable recording during the test, your response won't be submitted, and the test will end.

Think-aloud tasks in recorded tests

In some recorded tests, you may be required to complete a “think-aloud” task. During these tasks, you’ll speak your thoughts out loud as you complete a given action, allowing the researcher to understand your experience and thought process. This feedback is valuable in improving the user experience.

Before you begin your first think-aloud task, a mandatory video walkthrough will be shown to help you understand how to complete this task. Please watch the video carefully before proceeding. We've also included it below so you can watch it again for a refresher at any time.
